Description
The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) invites applications to its Ph.D. program. The program will commence on September 1st, 2012. Successful applicants for the Ph.D. and Post-doc fellowships will pursue a topic in one of BIGSSS’ five Thematic Fields. All fellows are expected to chooseBremen as their place of residence. In each of BIGSSS‘five Thematic Fields “The Future of Social and Political Integration“ is being examined from a particular perspective. The Thematic Fields are:

Scholarship
BIGSSS offers 15 Ph.D. stipends of 1250 Euros/month for 36 months, contingent on successful completion of each year. To support its Ph.D. fellows in achieving early scientific independence, it also provides funds for conducting, presenting and publishing research. There is no separate funding application, because all admitted applicants receive a stipend.
Eligibility
An excellent MA degree (or national equivalents like the German “Diplom” or “Magister”) in a discipline pertinent to at least one of BIGSSS’ five Thematic fields (see above), i.e. in Political Science (including related degree programs in European Studies or International Relations), Sociology, Psychology, Law, Economics or Mass Communication. The degree must be completed by the end of July of the year of application, which means you may apply before having finished your MA degree.
English proficiency as described in the application materials section below.

1.3 Statement of Purpose- This should provide a clear picture of your academic and professional interests, background, and career plans. It should also describe how your interests fit in with the BIGSSS Ph.D. program. It is very welcome if you can indicate a particular BIGSSS Faculty member as potential supervisor.
1.4 Statement of Skills and Experience with Methods of Empirical Social Research- Please provide information on your knowledge of research methods (including methods courses taken) (of approx. one page in total). Applicants from disciplines with little or no standard methods training should provide other pertinent information on relevant research skills.
2. Preliminary Dissertation Proposal- It is not expected that you have an ultimate version of your dissertation proposal upon application. Nonetheless, we ask for a well-developed version of your preliminary dissertation proposal. It should be written in English, encompass between 5 and 15 double-spaced pages and include the following elements:
a) Summary
b) State of research (highlighting theoretical and empirical debates on your topic and deficits in the literature that your project would address)
c) Your research experience/competence in the field
d) Objectives, methods and work plan (be very specific about the methods used and the stages of the work plan)
e) Bibliography

The grant consists of 1,600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master’s programme (standard period of study).

Academic Scholarships- No Separate Application Required
Academic Scholarships acknowledge students who have reached a high level of academic achievement throughout their high school career. As part of Colby-Sawyer’s rolling admissions process, students will be informed of the award decision at the point of acceptance. Students will receive the one academic scholarship that they are most qualified for. For international students, Admissions will recalculate grade point averages (GPAs) based on equivalent letter and number grades from the student’s Official High School Transcript.

Wesson Honors Scholarship - up to $76,000 over four years
Students with a 3.75 GPA at the time of admission are eligible to apply for the Wesson Honors Scholarship. This $19,000 per year scholarship includes direct admission into the Wesson Honors Program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon good academic standing in the Wesson Honors Program.
Founders Scholarship - up to $68,000 over four years
Students with a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the Founders Scholarship. Students receiving this $17,000 per year award have graduated from high school with honors level classes and a rigorous college preparatory program. It is automatically awarded based on GPA at time of admission. It is renewable annually for four years of study.
Presidential Scholarship - up to $64,000 over four years
Students with a 3.3 GPA are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship. This $16,000 award is renewable annually for four years of study. It is automatically awarded based on GPA at time of admission.
Chargers Scholarship - up to $52,000 over four years
Students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for the Chargers Scholarship. It is automatically awarded based on GPA at time of admission. This $13,000 per year award is renewable annually for four years.
Merit Based Awards- Separate Application Required
Colby-Sawyer offers merit based scholarships to incoming students based on their high school academic record, leadership qualities and community service involvement. These awards are not based on need and are renewable each year as long as the student remains in good academic standing. Students are eligible to apply for merit awards at any point, including prior to being accepted.
Colby-Sawyer Grant
Grant assistance is given to students based on their financial need, as well as their academic performance. Students receiving grant assistance from the college may expect to receive similar grant awards each year as long as family circumstances do not change, all application deadlines are met, and the student remains in good social and academic standing.

New call of scholarships at the Erasmus Mundus for students/scholars aiming to study/teach at the Master on Work, Organization and Personnel Psychology (WOP‐P). Recently awarded by the Mediterranean Office for Youth and in its second round by the Erasmus Mundus program, WOP‐P master continues to be considered one of the best programs in its professional and academic area. Five universities are part of the educational consortium: Universitat de València (Spain), Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), Université René Descartes Paris 5 (France), Alma Mater Studiorum‐Università di Bologna (Italy) and Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal). New partnerships have been developed with the Universidade de Brasília (Brazil) and University of Guelph (Canada). In the second round of the WOP‐P Program, some changes have been introduced such as the possibility to study the whole program in English and to develop exchange periods of study with the new American Universities in the partnership.

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarships
The University of Edinburgh will offer three scholarships to students from Tanzania for postgraduate Master's study in any subject offered by the University for the 2012-2013 academic session.
The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree that saw him study courses in English, Political Economy, Social Anthropology, British History, Economic History, Constitutional Law, and Moral Philosophy.
The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarships will cover the full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK.
The scholarships will be tenable for one academic year.
Eligibility
The scholarships will be awarded to Tanzanian citizens who are normally resident in Tanzania, and who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master's programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.
Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.
Criteria
The three Scholarships are awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit, with candidates requiring a Bachelors degree equivalent to a UK First Class Honours ('First') or Upper Division/Upper Second Class Honours ('2:1') degree.
N.B. The Julius Nyerere Master’s Scholarships are highly competitive and only the best candidates are considered. Prospective applicants should note that, to date, successful candidates for the Scholarships have all held a First Class Honours degree. Applicants with a 2:1 Honours degree will be considered if they can show a very strong track record of work experience relevant to their prospective degree.

Scholarship Description:
New call of scholarships at the Erasmus Mundus for students/scholars aiming to study/teach at the Master on Work, Organization and Personnel Psychology (WOP‐P). Recently awarded by the Mediterranean Office for Youth and in its second round by the Erasmus Mundus program, WOP‐P master continues to be considered one of the best programs in its professional and academic area. Five universities are part of the educational consortium: Universitat de València (Spain), Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), Université René Descartes Paris 5 (France), Alma Mater Studiorum‐Università di Bologna (Italy) and Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal). New partnerships have been developed with the Universidade de Brasília (Brazil) and University of Guelph (Canada). In the second round of the WOP‐P Program, some changes have been introduced such as the possibility to study the whole program in English and to develop exchange periods of study with the new American Universities in the partnership.

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarships
The University of Edinburgh will offer three scholarships to students from Tanzania for postgraduate Master's study in any subject offered by the University for the 2012-2013 academic session.
The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree that saw him study courses in English, Political Economy, Social Anthropology, British History, Economic History, Constitutional Law, and Moral Philosophy.
The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarships will cover the full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK.
The scholarships will be tenable for one academic year.
Eligibility
The scholarships will be awarded to Tanzanian citizens who are normally resident in Tanzania, and who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master's programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.
Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.
Criteria
The three Scholarships are awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit, with candidates requiring a Bachelors degree equivalent to a UK First Class Honours ('First') or Upper Division/Upper Second Class Honours ('2:1') degree.
N.B. The Julius Nyerere Master’s Scholarships are highly competitive and only the best candidates are considered. Prospective applicants should note that, to date, successful candidates for the Scholarships have all held a First Class Honours degree. Applicants with a 2:1 Honours degree will be considered if they can show a very strong track record of work experience relevant to their prospective degree.

Selection Procedure
A Selection Committee will meet in mid May 2012 to select the scholarship holder. The winners of the scholarships will be announced in late May 2012.
